A first Tour with The British & Irish Lions capped off an incredible rise through the rugby ranks for England international and Exeter Chiefs hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie.

Born in Truro, Cowan-Dickie began playing rugby aged just six with Penzance & Newlyn before joining the Chiefs and making his debut in the 2011 Amlin Challenge Cup aged 18.

Previously dual-registered with both the Cornish Pirates and Plymouth Albion, his Premiership debut for Chiefs arrived in 2014 and he has since made more than 100 appearances.

Cowan-Dickie started the Premiership final in 2016/17 as Chiefs defeated Wasps to be crowned champions before repeating the feat against the same opponents in 2019/20.

He also started the 2019/20 final of the Heineken Champions Cup, scoring the opening try for the Chiefs as they completed a historic Premiership and European double.

A member of England’s 39-strong training squad for the 2015 Rugby World Cup, Cowan-Dickie’s Test debut arrived against France at Twickenham in a warm-up match.

While he ultimately missed out on World Cup selection, he won his second Test cap against Wales in March 2016 before playing the final 12 minutes of the Grand Slam-clinching win over France.

Cowan-Dickie was also a member of the England touring party that achieved a whitewash over Australia that summer before ankle and knee injuries restricted his playing time.

But he made his international return in 2018 after being called up by Eddie Jones for the Six Nations squad, making three appearances on that year’s tour of South Africa.

He made another four appearances in the following year’s Six Nations before being selected in the squad which reached the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Japan.

Cowan-Dickie has remained a regular in the England match-day 23 ever since, making three appearances in their 2020 Six Nations triumph and another five in the 2021 Championship, of which he started three.

The hooker arrived in South Africa in red-hot form and he made seven appearances in all on Tour, including four starts.

Cowan-Dickie was locked in a battle with Ken Owens and Jamie George for the No.2 jersey and got the nod for first Test.

He repaid Gatland’s faith with the Lions’ only try of the game in a 22-17 win. He also started the second Test, which South Africa won 27-9, before coming off the bench in the decider, which the hosts again won 19-16 to claim the series 2-1.
