After displaying fine form for club and country, helping Ireland to win the Grand Slam in 2009, versatile back Luke Fitzgerald was given his first Lions call-up for the tour to South Africa.
He played in four warm-up matches, touching down against the Sharks, before making his debut in the second Test match against the Springboks.
Fitzgerald played the full 80 minutes of the Lions heartbreaking defeat but did not feature in the third Test.
Following the tour Fitzgerald battled injury problems but did feature for Ireland in their run to the 2015 Rugby World Cup quarter-finals. However, he was forced to retire from the game in June 2016, aged 28, with a neck injury.
