Maro Itoje has been selected for his third Lions Tour and joins the likes of Taulupe Faletau, Jeremy Guscott, Paul O'Connell and Owen Farrell who have completed the set of travelling to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The England captain will be eager to secure an all-important Lions series win after being one of the standout players during the previous two tours.

He has amassed six caps for the touring side, starting two Tests and coming off the bench during the first game in the drawn series in New Zealand in 2017 and featuring from the off in all three Tests during the 2-1 defeat to South Africa four years later.

The 30-year-old has already had a distinguished career on the international stage, winning the 2016 Grand Slam with his country – one of three Six Nations titles - as well as reaching the 2019 Rugby World Cup final and being a three-time nominee for World Rugby Player of the Year.

Steve Borthwick, his boss at national level, described Itoje as “outstanding” during this year’s Guinness Men’s Six Nations campaign and is backing his skipper to make an impact Down Under.

“He leads by example every day, and he has stepped up his game,” said Borthwick.

“He has improved in many areas and set an example.

“He is an experienced player at Test level and Lions level, and I have got full confidence in Maro's ability.”

Domestically, Itoje is a Saracens icon, spending his whole career at the North London-based outfit since his debut in 2013, winning five Premiership crowns and three European Champions Cups in that time.
