Martyn Williams was part of three Lions teams in 2001, 2005 and 2009, making his debut against the Queensland Presidents’ XV in Australia in 2001.
That was the first of 17 appearances in the famous Lions red jersey – including three Test caps for the Welsh flanker.
He did not make the Test side on his first tour in 2001 but was in the side for the third Test against the All Blacks in 2005 and four years later in 2009 he played in two Tests against the Springboks.
He made 100 appearances of Wales and was a hero of their 2005 Grand Slam, when he was also named player of the Tournament.
Williams played club rugby for Pontypridd, with whom he won the 1996–97 Welsh league, then moved to Cardiff, where he played for 13 years. He retired in 2012.
