Having featured in one Test for The British & Irish Lions in 1896, Matthew Mullineux’s appearance in the famous jersey was to ramp up three years later, taking to the field in Australia as captain and Tour manager.
However, he was to only play ten games on the Tour, and just the first Test against Australia, a 13-3 defeat to the Wallabies.
From there on, the scrum-half captain elected to drop himself, with Charlie Adamson coming in as the Lions went on to win the series 3-1 under the leadership of Frank Stout. Mullineux was applauded for his self-sacrifice for the team’s benefit.
He was to also play one Test against South Africa in 1896, scoring four tries in 12 matches in all, before going on to earn the Military Cross during the First World War.
