Maurice Richards’ Test rugby union career may have been shortlived but the winger left a big impact on the game after being named a Lion for the 1968 Tour to South Africa.
After being honed at Cardiff, Richards made the step up to Wales as a 23-year-old in the Five Nations - starting both Tests in losing efforts to France and Ireland.
However, the Lions selectors had clearly seen enough of the Ystrad-born back and not only invited him on Tour but handed him a starting berth against the Springboks.
Richards started three Tests of four on the left flank opposite England wing Keith Savage - and though he did not score against South Africa, he was a pure menace in the provincial games.
He scored four tries in four games early in the Tour before finishing with five in total through 11 appearances.
Richards then embarked on a successful rugby league career and still holds the most career appearances (605) for Salford.
