A lock by trade, Colonel Mike Campbell-Lamerton was also a Test No 8 who twice toured as a Lion and was selected as captain for the 1966 Tour to Australia and New Zealand.

The Scot made it through bloody fighting in the Korean War to also captain his country having, at the age of 15, been struck in the chest by a javelin which was stopped only by a resilient rib.

In Korea, he stood on a mine, but remained immobile until a corporal, a former bomb disposal expert, was able to diffuse it beneath him.

He also fell 60 feet from a helicopter in Cyprus damaging his hips, back and legs but somehow recovered to excel for both Scotland and the Lions.

He made his Scotland debut in 1961 as a second row and undertook his first Lions Tour in 1962 when he travelled to South Africa. He played 22 times on that Tour, scoring three tries.

He led the side to a 2-0 series victory in Australia four years later but chose to end his own career when he dropped himself as captain during the New Zealand series.

The second row received an OBE in 1979.
