Flanker Nigel Carr, although never touring with the British & Irish Lions, did pull on the famous red jersey in the 1986 game against a Rest of the World XV.
The game was set up to commemorate the centenary of the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB), which would shortly afterwards become the IRB – the International Rugby Board.
The Lions, managed by Clive Rowlands and coached by Mick Doyle, couldn’t overcome the opposition at a wet Cardiff however, suffering a 15-7 defeat.
For Carr, his outing with the Lions came just a year after he made his senior international debut for Ireland against Scotland, with the back rower part of that year’s Triple Crown winning side.
He was renowned as one half of a devastating back-row duo alongside Ulster teammate Phillip Matthews, who played for the British & Irish Lions against France in 1989.
However, Carr’s career was cut short due to injuries sustained due to an IRA car bomb on 25 April 1987.
