Leeds-born scrum-half Nigel Melville played for Otley and Wakefield before moving to Wasps in 1981.
His 13-cap England career began in 1981 on a tour to Argentina and he got the call-up to the Lions for the 1983 Tour to New Zealand.
Melville was an injury replacement for Terry Holmes on the tour and he impressed in his debut against Southland, scoring two tries in a 41-3 victory.
In his second Lions appearance, a fortnight later against North Auckland, Melville unfortunately suffered an injury himself, ending his tour that had only begun because of injury to Holmes.
Melville’s short but distinguished international career saw him captain England seven times, including on his debut, winning four games.
After retirement Melville became director of rugby at Wasps, coaching them to a first professional Premiership title in 1996, before moving to Gloucester in 2002.
After a stint as president of rugby operations for USA Rugby he returned home, becoming director of professional rugby for the RFU in 2016.
