Patrick McEvedy was the first Kiwi, he was born in Taumata, to appear for the Lions when he toured New Zealand and Australia in 1904.

Like Arthur O’Brien, he was a medical student at Guy’s Hospital and a member of their rugby club and was selected to play in the second and third Test victories over Australia – a series the Lions won 3-0.

He also featured in the Test defeat to the All Blacks, scoring two tries in 13 appearances across the entire four month tour. The winger returned to Lions duty in 1908 to earn two more Test caps.

Dr Patrick McEvedy went on to serve as President of the New Zealand Rugby Union after his playing days and his name has also been given to the McEvedy Shield - an annual athletics competition in Wellington.
