After making his international debut in 1891 for Scotland, he was called up by the Lions for their Tour of South Africa in the same year.

He played in all three Tests on the Tour, all of which were won by the Lions, to complete a successful year, having already helped Scotland to the Triple Crown earlier in the year.

He finished with six Scotland caps in all in addition to his three Test appearances for the Lions.

Clauss played his club rugby for Oxford University and Birkenhead Park, and he was also one of the original members of the Barbarians.
