A commanding forward, Percy Down gained himself a reputation as a tough and committed player at Bristol having joined from Redlands.
In 1908, he was chosen to tour New Zealand and Australia, but almost drowned after falling overboard as the boat left for Australia after completing the Kiwi leg of the Tour – he was rescued by two New Zealand players who kept him afloat until a rope was lowered to him.
Down featured in all three Test matches for the Lions, as well as in 17 other fixtures in the southern hemisphere.
After calling time on his playing career, Down served as both chairman and vice-chairman of Bristol.
