Philip Matthews never toured with The British & Irish Lions but did pull on the famous red jersey for their 1989 centenary celebration match against France in Paris.
The former Ireland flanker finished his career with 36 caps for the men in green – captaining them during the 1991 World Cup as they came close to knocking out eventual champions Australia in the quarter-finals.
He also captained the Barbarians during an illustrious career and after his hanging up his boots occasionally commentates on his home town club Ulster for the BBC.
