Randolph Aston was one of the stars of the 1891 Lions Tour to South Africa as his combination of pace and size came to the fore on the hard South African pitches.

A Cambridge University Blue, Aston got his first taste of international rugby for England when he was selected at centre to play Scotland in 1890.

A year later the centre was chosen as part of Bill Maclagan’s Lions team to South Africa, and on that Tour he racked up 31 tries in 20 games.

That included two tries across the three Tests as the Lions claimed the series victory, while he also scored four tries in one game against Transvaal County Districts, and hat-tricks against King Williamstown & District and Pietermaritzburg in a stunning try-scoring run of games.
