Rob Henderson had dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player in his youth but few were as naturally built for the sport of rugby as him.
At centre, Henderson had that rare balance of speed and brute power and the Lions enjoyed him at his peak in 2001 – his call-up came in between the disappointment of missing out on Ireland selection for both the 1999 and 2003 Rugby World Cup.
If his laidback attitude stopped him from hitting the heights in international rugby, nothing would motivated him more than taking on Australia in the famous red jersey alongside Brian O’Driscoll.
Having scored four tries in just three games during the warm-ups, Henderson started at No.12 for all three Tests – his work in softening up the Wallabies’ line played no small part in O’Driscoll’s wonder try in the opener.
