Rob Howley’s success with the Lions spans decades after being part of a series-winning tour as both a player and a coach.
Having made his Wales debut in 1996, the scrum-half was handed the ultimate call-up a year later under Sir Ian McGeechan’s guidance in South Africa.
Cruelly Howley did not participate in the Test series after dislocating his shoulder against Natal, but in his place Matt Dawson became enshrined in Lions folklore following his ‘dummy’ try in the first meeting with the Springboks.
Howley appeared again four years later in Australia and deservedly won Test caps in the first two clashes against the Wallabies – and scored a try-double in a warm-up with West Australia.
After retiring in 2002 with 61 Test caps to his name Howley took to the backroom and was named Lions attack coach for both 2009 and 2013 tours, helping break the 16-year streak without a series win in the latter.
