Born in Midlothian, Robert ‘Bob’ Howie represented the Lions on the 1924 Tour to South Africa, starting at prop in all four Test matches.

The Tour, however, was unsuccessful, the Springboks won three tests and the fourth was drawn.

Howie also represented Scotland seven times between 1924 and 1925, but did not manage to score any points in his international appearances.

He played his club rugby for Kirkcaldy, alongside his brother Dave. Their father, who was a farmer, never went to see his sons play, saying: "Rugby an' fermin' will no agree, an' A ken which'll pit mair money in yer pooch.”
