Robert Neill spent much of his life in Edinburgh, where he played and studied at Edinburgh Academy, and represented his country at an early age.

He won two caps for Scotland and his first was against England in 1901, in a Home Nations Championship that would prove glorious for the Scots.

While Neill lined up at scrum-half for both of his Scotland appearances, it was at full-back where the Lions deployed him when he received the call-up in 1903.

Neill, still only 20 at the time, earned two Test caps in a series that was ultimately won 1-0 by South Africa, though he appeared 13 times in total on Tour.
