Flanker Rodger Arneil earned his Lions berth in the Tour to South Africa in 1968 – a mere three months after debuting for Scotland against Ireland at Landsdowne Road.

That was to be the first of Arneil’s two Tours, despite his international career coming to its conclusion four years later, playing in all four Tests against the Springboks.

Arneil was one of just six Scots on the 1968 Tour, but made the flanker position his own, victorious in all eight non-Test matches, while also racking up 22 caps for his country.

He was to travel to New Zealand three years later too while playing for Leicester in England, but the presence of Peter Dixon, John Taylor and Derek Quinnell at flanker limited Arneil to featuring in just five games on the Tour.
