Part of one Tour as a player, Roger Uttley featured in all four Tests against South Africa in the ‘Invincibles’ Tour of 1974, also crossing for a key score in the final match of the series – the 13-13 draw in Johannesburg.
Originally selected as a lock for the Tour, Englishman Uttley would go on to be part of a formidable back-row line-up alongside Irishman Fergus Slattery and Wales' Mervyn Davies as the Lions took the series 3-0, conceding an average of less than nine points per Test.
But Uttley’s Lions exploits weren’t finished there, he was the assistant coach in the successful 1989 Tour to Australia, in which the team became the first and only Lions side in history to come from a Test down to win the series.
He was also to captain England in five of his 23 Tests, later becoming the manager of the national side in the 1990s.
