Hooker Ross Ford was summoned to South Africa in 2009 after Jerry Flannery suffered an elbow injury and was forced to withdraw.

After playing in five warm-up matches, starting three of them, he was an unused replacement for the second Test defeat in Pretoria, with Matthew Rees instead handed the No.2 shirt.

Ford did though come off the bench to replace Rees late in the first half of the third and final Test, making him the sole Scotsman to wear the famous red jersey against the Springboks that summer.
