Rowland Griffiths first came to note in the rugby world when playing for Newport, for whom he represented between 1902 and 1908 – in 1905, he scored the club’s first-ever points against a touring side, a penalty versus the All Blacks.

Although he never won an international cap for Wales, Griffiths was selected for the Lions’ Tour to New Zealand and Australia in 1908.

While the full back wasn’t capped in any of the Test matches against New Zealand, he featured in five regional games, scoring a try in the Lions’ 26-0 victory over Poverty Bay.

Griffiths later moved to France, where he played for Stade Nantais Universite Club and Racing Club de France, before dying of typhoid at just 29 years of age.
