Scrum-half Roy Laidlaw tasted more action than most in the 1983 Tour of New Zealand, playing in 13 of the 18 matches including all four Tests against the All Blacks.
An injury to Terry Holmes opened the door for the Scot, who came on as a replacement in the first Test and never looked back.
In two of the three matches against provincial sides between the first and second Tests, Laidlaw was given the captain’s armband.
He marked his first foray as skipper with a try in the 52-16 win over West Coast.
Laidlaw became Scotland’s captain in the same year and spearheaded their Grand Slam victory in 1984.
He won 47 caps in all, partnering fly-half John Rutherford a then-record 35 times. His nephew Greig has also gone onto represent Scotland as a Test scrum-half and captain.
