A player offering a wealth of versatility across the forward line, Russell Robins went on one Tour for the Lions, making the trip to South Africa in 1955.

The Welshman was capable of playing at lock, flanker or No 8, a commodity much enjoyed as Robins featured in all four Test matches.

The Pontypridd player started the Tour at No 8, helping the Lions to a thrilling 23-22 victory in Johannesburg before occupying the flanker’s role for the second Test defeat.

And a return to No 8 seemed to work wonders for Robins and the Lions alike, regaining the series lead in Pretoria before eventually claiming a share of the spoils.

Robins was to also feature 13 times for Wales, impressively winning ten of those matches to earn a Lions berth just two years after making his debut.
