Cumbrian Sam Martindale racked up 12 starts for the Lions during the 1930 Tour of New Zealand and Australia.
While the lock was used solely in the provincial games in New Zealand, not featuring in a Test against the All Blacks, he did play in the one encounter with Australia, a tense 6-5 loss to the hosts.
As well as the one Test cap, the Englishman also scored six points for the Lions, notching two against Hawkes Bay, and kicking another four in a 38-5 victory over North Auckland.
Martindale’s Lions career mirrored his international career, with his sole Lions cap matched by a singular appearance for England, in the 1929 Five Nations.
