Sandy Carmichael may not have played in any of the Tests during the victorious 1971 and 1974 Tours but he was a towering figure in the game during the 1970s.
The Scot is recognised as one of the bravest and fairest players to grace the game but was also an exceptional player to go with it.
He is still regarded as being one of the fastest props to have appeared for Scotland in recent decades and his time playing at No.8 for his school team saw him develop a diverse skill-set.
Carmichael was very hard to stop with the ball in hand and a solid scrummager, while also being a revered cover tackler.
The West of Scotland star’s bravery was never more evident than when he suffered five fractures to the cheekbone during the fiercely-contested match with Canterbury in 1971 but carried on playing until the final whistle – with the injuries eventually forcing him home early.
Carmichael made 16 appearances for the Lions and was capped 50 times by his country.
