Kent-born forward Sydney Crowther was one of the mainstays of the British & Irish Lions Tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1904.

Crowther – who played his club rugby for Lennox RFC – made 17 appearances in all for the tourists on that Tour including all four Tests but never won an England cap.

The Lions won 3-0 against the Wallabies but lost their only clash with the All Black. Crowther’s sole try on the tour came in Australia against Metropolitan.

When the team returned home after the 1904 campaign, Crowther, along with team-mates David Bedell-Sivright and Blair Swannell, decided to remain in Australia to begin a new life, although Crowther later returned to England.

All three of these players lost their lives in the First World War.
