Simon Shaw appeared in three Lions Tours but is perhaps most famous for his long-awaited Test debut that came in 2009 against South Africa at the grand old age of 35.

Shaw first toured with the Lions in 1997 – also to South Africa – making his debut against Eastern Province in a mid-week clash and making seven appearances in all.

After missing out on the tour to Australia in 2001, the lock played five matches during the 2005 Tour in New Zealand but again did not crack the Test squad.

He returned to South Africa in 2009 and became the oldest ever Lions Test debutant when he was selected for the second Test in Pretoria, with his performance earning him the man of the match award and a starting berth for the historic third Test win.

Shaw was not in Sir Clive Woodward’s initial England 2003 World Cup squad but was later flown out as a replacement for the injured Danny Grewcock.

He was capped 71 times by England between 1996 and 2011 and played club rugby for Bristol, London Wasps and Toulon.
