Staff Jones was an archetypal hard man of rugby – one story goes that he once recharged after a game by eating 27 roast potatoes.
The loosehead prop was a key part of Pontypool’s purple patch in Welsh club rugby during the 1980s and received his first cap for his country in 1983.
That was also the year in which he became a Lion and it was personally a very busy summer for Jones, who appeared a staggering 13 times on Tour. The run also included the three Tests against New Zealand.
Jones only won ten Wales caps in total but it was a case of quality over quantity as, after recovering from a serious knee injury in 1986, he starred in his country’s Triple Crown-winning side two years later.
