Stan Couchman made his mark on rugby as both a player and an administrator with the highlight of his playing career being the 1938 Lions Tour to South Africa.

Despite not having won an international cap for England, Couchman received the call-up from manager Major Bernard Charles Hartley and went on to make 11 appearances on Tour with the Lions.

The lock scored tries in the defeat to Western Province (Town & Country) at Newlands and the 18-3 victory over Orange Free State Country at Loubser Park.

Couchman plied his club trade at Old Cranleighans, made 45 appearances for Surrey in County Championship games and became president of the RFU in the 1970s before his death in 1992.
