Steve Bainbridge was deemed to be one of the success stories of the 1983 Tour to New Zealand.
Bainbridge featured in 11 matches in total and was promoted to the starting XV for the final two Tests, where he performed well alongside his England second row partner Maurice Colclough.
The Gosforth forward was part of an England side who struggled in the early 1980s but went on to make 43 appearances for his country in total – although only 18 of those were capped.
Bainbridge was also a talented decathlon athlete and was tipped to challenge for a place at the Olympics before settling on rugby after university.
