Before making his Lions debut in on the 1983 Tour to New Zealand, Steve Smith was a member of England’s Grand Slam-winning squad in 1980.

Smith had been called up to the Lions squad in that year, as an injury replacement, but did not play a game on the tour to South Africa.

Three years later the scrum-half played twice in mid-week Tour matches, once against Hawkes Bay on July 6, then again just three days later against Counties Manukau.

The Lions won both encounters, 25-19 and 25-16, respectively.

After his playing days ended, the former Sale and Loughborough University player founded Cotton Traders, in 1987, with teammate Fran Cotton.

As well as being a businessman, Smith was also employed by ITV as a commentator for World Cups between 1991 and 2003.
