Stuart Hogg finally became a Test Lion in South Africa on his third British & Irish Lions Tour which came shortly after his 29th birthday.

Despite having his game time in the build-up limited after spending time in isolation, the Scotland captain started at full-back in the 22-17 win over the Springboks in the first Test in Cape Town.

He retained his starting spot for the second match but after the Lions went down 27-9 he was replaced by Liam Williams at the back for the decider.

Hogg captained the Lions for the first time in the 56-14 win over the Sigma Lions in the opening game in South Africa. He has now made 11 appearances in the famous red shirt, scoring 23 points.

After heading to Australia as the youngest player on Tour in 2013, he went to New Zealand four years later with his sights set on securing the Test full-back jersey after some stellar displays for Scotland.

But his trip to the Land of the Long White Cloud was ended before the Test series against the All Blacks could get underway – he suffered a facial injury when he accidentally collided with Conor Murray in the third match of the Tour against the Crusaders.

The bone fracture ended Hogg’s Tour prematurely and the Scotland full-back was distraught to be heading home prior to the Test series which was drawn 1-1.

Before that the Scot had started the Tour opener against the New Zealand Provincial Barbarians and was looking to claim the No.15 jersey.

That came after his 2013 Tour with the Lions to Australia when he made five appearances in the famous red jersey.

That included four starts, one of which was at fly-half against Combined NSW Queensland Country, crossing for a try in that game and also kicking goals against both the Brumbies and Rebels.

Since the 2017 Tour, Hogg has become Scotland captain and in the 2021 Six Nations he steered them to a first away win in England since 1983 and France since 1999.

With Scotland, Hogg has twice been named Six Nations Player of the Championship, in 2016 and 2017, the first Scot to do so.

And domestically, he enjoyed a dream first season with Exeter Chiefs after joining from Glasgow Warriors. He was a key cog in the Chiefs winning a domestic and European double, with the latter their first Heineken Champions Cup title.
