Stuart Lane holds the unfortunate record of the shortest career of any British & Irish Lions tourist, having picked up a knee injury after just 55 seconds of the opening game of the 1980 Tour of South Africa against Eastern Province Kings.
The injury was a particular blow to the tourists who had been looking to use the openside flanker’s pace against South Africa.
But ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments put paid to that and the unfortunate Lane would never again make another international appearance.
Lane, who played for Cardiff, Newport and Newbridge, was one of eight players to leave the Tour early through injury, while Mike Slemen also went home for family reasons.
