A Welshman who was equally adept at rugby league and rugby union, Terry Holmes toured twice with The British & Irish Lions – to South Africa in 1980 and then New Zealand in 1983.

Given the task of filling the Wales scrum-half position after the retirement of Gareth Edwards, Holmes found himself on his first Lions Tour just two years after making his international debut for Wales against Australia.

He was involved in three of the six Tour matches before the first Test, scoring a try in each game against Eastern Province Kings, Natal and Orange Free State.

And after watching on for the first Test defeat, Holmes would then go on to appear in just one more Tour match before a combination of shoulder and knee injuries brought a premature end to his Tour.

It would be a recurring theme for Holmes who, after playing in three Tour matches in 1983, finally got his Test debut against New Zealand before again picking up an injury and seeing his Tour curtailed.
