Thomas ‘Fred’ Huskisson’s distinguished rugby career was far surpassed by his heroics during World War Two, where he won two Military Crosses.
During tours in Rome and Algiers he was shot and injured by a mortar bomb, receiving awards for his bravery and leadership but it was for The British & Irish Lions that he initially made his name.
Huskisson was born in Mortlake, Surrey in 1914 and learned his rugby trade at Merchant Taylors’ School.
He began life as a full-back before moving to lock in 1931 and after his stint with the Lions in 1936 in Argentina, he went on to win eight England caps.
