Born in County Durham, Tom Gibson came from a family gifted with sporting talents as both his brothers, Charles and George, were also international rugby players.
Gibson played his rugby as a forward for Newcastle-based club Northern but only played for England after he became a Lion.
His call came in 1903 ahead of the Tour to South Africa, where he played 19 times and earned three caps in a Test series that ended 2-1 in the Springboks’ favour.
He did not make his England bow for another two years but, when the time came, picked up two Test caps in defeats to Wales and Scotland.
