Selected for the 1924 Tour to South Africa, Thomas Holliday’s Lions career lasted only until the first Test, a broken collarbone ruling him out of the rest of the series.

The full-back, who was also a capable centre, had played three times for England before his Lions call-up, and went on to make seven in total.

Away from the international stage, Holliday’s greatest achievement was perhaps captaining Cumberland to the County Championship in 1924, defeating Kent 6-3 in the final.

He made the switch to rugby league in 1926. Playing for Oldham, he scored three tries in the 1927 Challenge Cup final, the first to be broadcast on the BBC.

In 1926, Ogden’s ‘Famous Rugby Players’ described him as “a safe full-back, and although he does not have a kick of great length, he always makes sure of finding touch.”
