Birkenhead outside-half Tom Knowles was part of the British & Irish Lions side who travelled to New Zealand and Australia in 1930, as well as the 1936 Tour to Argentina.
In Argentina he played under skipper Bernard Gadney and started at outside-half in 1936 as the Tourists dismantled Argentina 23-0, capping off a dominant series of performances in which they conceded just 12 points and scored 399.
Yet the one-cap English international made his name in the Lions shirt as a ‘dirt-tracker’ on the 1930 Lions Tour.
He played 14 games in New Zealand and Australia, scoring three tries in successive starts against North Auckland, Marlborough/Nelson Bays and Queensland.
