Tommy Bowe was a shining light on the 2009 Tour to South Africa where he played in all three Test matches and the winger shook off a hand injury to make the Test side again four years later against Australia.
Having only really established himself in the international set-up in 2008 with Ireland, Bowe was a key figure in Ireland's Grand Slam win a year later to earn himself a spot in Sir Ian McGeechan's Lions squad to tour South Africa.
Despite the agonising Test series defeat, Bowe was a stand-out performer for the Lions including starting the famous third Test win over the Boks at the unfamiliar position of outside centre.
Bowe finished second behind Jamie Roberts for the Player of the Series and individual accolades flowed soon after including the 2010 Player of the Championship, the IRUPA Players' Player of the Year and the Rugby Writers of Ireland Player of the Year.
Injuries hampered his progress in the intervening years and his bad luck struck again when he broke a bone in his hand on the 2013 Lions tour to Australia in a clash with the Queensland Reds.
Initial prognoses had him out of the tour but he recovered to replace Alex Cuthbert and start the second and third Tests of the historic series victory over the Wallabies.
