Tony Horton played Test rugby during a lean spell for England – so it is a testament to his abilities that he played a major role as a cornerstone of the scrum during the Lions 1968 Tour of South Africa.

Horton, who played his club rugby for Blackheath, won seven England caps but was on the victorious side just once against France in 1966.

When the prop was called up, he had only appeared once for the Red Rose in two years – against the All Blacks no less – but became a Test Lion after replacing John O’Shea at tight-head for the second encounter.

It would be the best result the Lions would achieve against South Africa, a 9-9 draw, and Horton played the remaining two Tests to bring his total appearances on Tour up to 12.
