Tony Novis was selected for the 1930 Lions Tour to New Zealand and Australia just a year after making his debut for the Red Rose of England.

The flying winger, who studied at Oxford University, made 19 appearances for the Lions, scoring a remarkable 17 tries in the process.

Despite his scoring prowess Novis played in just three of the Tour’s five Tests, touching down in the final encounter with the All Blacks, and the sole match against the Wallabies.

The remainder of his tries would come in provincial matches and Novis is best remembered for his hat-trick against the combined Waikato, King City and Thames Valley side.

Away from the Lions Novis continued his try-scoring, dotting down six times in ten England appearances. He also won the Military Cross in 1941 for his part in the Battle of Sidi Barrani.
