Squadron Leader Vesey Boyle represented Ireland and The British & Irish Lions before earning a Distinguished Flying Cross during the Second World War as a bomber pilot.

He played as a scrum-half at Dublin High School before moving to the wing when he read law at Dublin University.

He was selected by Ireland in December 1935 for their match against the All Blacks and was marking Prince Alexander Obolensky the following year when they played England.

Boyle's tackling kept England's flying winger quiet throughout the game and the Irishman even went on to score one of Ireland's tries in their 9-3 victory.

He had nine appearances for Ireland and was selected for the 1936 Tour to Argentina and the Tour to South Africa two years later .

In his second Tour he scored six tries and played in two of the three Tests, scoring a try in one.
