Half-back Walter Bumby was selected to Tour with The British & Irish Lions to Australia and New Zealand in 1888, where he played 23 times.
The Lancastrian started his rugby career at Pendlebury before moving to Swinton in 1880.
Initially a three-quarter, Bumby moved to half-back and had great success – scoring 23 tries in the 1882-83 season.
After two more consistent years Bumby earned a county call-up for Lancashire against Durham, before touring with the Lions in 1888.
He scored five tries on Tour, and later switched codes to rugby league.
