Despite never playing international rugby for England, Walter Carey was selected for the 1896 British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa, where he played in all four Tests.
They were to be the only Tests of the forward’s career, although extended playing time on the Tour allowed him to feature 17 times, scoring in the first Test in Port Elizabeth.
A keen sportsman while at university, Carey also got a chance with the Barbarians, where he instilled the quote: ‘Rugby Football is a game for gentlemen in all classes, but for no bad sportsman in any class.’
He also played for Cambridge in Varsity rugby, and it was the university who nominated him for an honour in the famous Lions jersey.
