Will Carling is regarded as one of England’s most successful-ever captains, winning three Grand Slam titles and also leading his side to the final of the 1991 World Cup against Australia at Twickenham.

In 1988 he became the youngest-ever England skipper at the age of 22 – and he was the most successful holder of the post until Martin Johnson’s tenure.

He featured more than 70 times for his country – forming a formidable centre pairing with Jeremy Guscott – and also appeared for The British & Irish Lions on the 1993 Tour of New Zealand.

Carling made seven appearances in total during the tour, starting for the tourists in the opening Test match against New Zealand.

The centre resigned his army commission in 1987 to concentrate on his rugby career; he played for Rosslyn Park before joining Harlequins.

Like many of his fellow 1993 tourists, Carling enjoyed a career in the media following his retirement.
