Born in Warrington before studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, William Mortimer showed he had more skills than just those on the field by working for the London Stock Exchange.
Shortly after, he got the nod for the 1896 British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa, earning the honour of playing all four Tests in the famous Lions jersey.
Also featuring for the Marlborough Nomads, the forward’s experience was limited before going on his first Tour, but a chance to play in 16 games – scoring a try against Western Province in the process – proved a highlight in the career of the Englishman.
He was also to earn a cap for his country, against Wales, three years after appearing for the Lions.
