William Patrick Scott, known as Bill Scott, underwent his education at a school renowned for its sporting excellence, Fettes College, and it was where he started his love affair with rugby.
The forward also played for West of Scotland and Barbarians and he had not long finished at school when he earned his first cap for Scotland.
Scott made his Scotland debut as a teenager in 1900, helping to form the backbone of a team that was prolific in Home Nations Championships at the turn of the 20th century.
And his performances in the victorious 1902 and 1903 Championships encouraged the Lions to select him for the 1903 Tour to South Africa.
There he appeared 22 times for the Lions in a two-month span, including all three Tests in the series against South Africa.
Upon his return Scott was a regular presence in the Scotland team until 1907 and his presence was felt in rugby long after his playing days were over, as he served as Scottish Rugby Union president between 1934 and 1935.
