Irish forward William Tyrell played ten games for the 1910 British & Irish Lions on their Tour to South Africa.
Tyrell played his senior rugby for Queen’s University Belfast – where he had studied medicine – and racked up nine caps for Ireland.
From 1910 to 1914 Tyrell won four games for Ireland, making his debut in an 8-3 win over France in front of 10000 people at Parc des Princes.
He played ten games for fellow Irish international Dr Tommy Smyth’s Lions side – though never played a Test – and scored a sole try against South Rhodesia.
After touring South Africa he would serve in both medical branches of the RAF and the Army, becoming Honorary Surgeon to the King in 1939 before going on to be President of the RFU in 1950/51.
