Former Ireland captain Willie Duggan was one of the leading No 8s in Europe when he was selected to represent the Lions for the 1977 Tour to New Zealand, despite his self-titled ‘pathological dislike of training’.
Duggan – who won 41 caps for his country, the first coming in 1975 – featured on 15 occasions for the Lions during that Tour, including all four Tests, scoring their only try in the 19-7 defeat in the third Test in Dunedin.
That try came exactly one week after Duggan – who at the time played club rugby for Blackrock College – first touched the ball down against Auckland, a game which the Lions won 34-15.
After retirement Duggan joined his family lighting firm with the Kilkenny-based company establishing itself as one of the leading lighting companies in the country.
